WORKSHOP 1: Design Thinking

Facilitated by Camilla Kane

This workshop creates space for understanding the  competences, attitudes and values related to global citizenship.
Participants practice creative thinking skills when planning creative actions as global citizens. It follows the design thinking process- Fluency, Flexibility, Originality and Elaboration and includes a SMART analysis to set goals for action. It will follow the principal that ALL ideas are welcomed in ideation phase no matter how absurd they may seem and exercise the skill to develop these ideas into practical solutions.
It will exercise lateral thinking skill in everyone and potentially produce innovation plans of action to carry out back home. It will demonstrate the power of working in a team/ participation and support the ability to put ideas into action.

Reflections from participants:
•   I connected, took notice, gave, learned and engaged actively.
•   It showed me that a little idea can grow into a life changing action/process with dedication. belief and thought. It allowed me to think more broadly about global issues and how I can change them.
•   It allowed me to not be afraid of big ideas or ideas that seem out there at first, then it made me achieve goals less daunting.
•   It is enabling a vision of a better future by thinking about local issues,
•   It helped me to generate better ideas that could actually work
  • We had to think together and had to accept each others ideas, by compromise by showing and discussing different ideas

The 5 ways of Wellbeing

CONNECT        TAKE NOTICE         KEEP LEARNING        GIVE        BE ACTIVE

We are using the  5 WAYS OF WELLBEING  as a model to explore how we can nurture capacities in young people to become more resilient and active citizens.

If we LEARN, GIVE TO OTHERS, CONNECT, BE ACTIVE & TAKE NOTICE, how does this impact on ourselves, others & the world?

Why connect Global Citizenship, Resilience and Wellbeing?

“So we can balance self to be able to work for a higher world, which is sustainable for us, the movements we work for and the planet”.

We all potentially have the wisdom to know what is needed for our own good health and the health of the world and others around us. Coming back to ourselves, discovering what we really need and reconnecting with nature and with ourselves will help enable us to look within to look outside. We can only be ok if everyone and everything around us is ok, which is the motivation to look after ourselves and build resilience, as well as the reason why we are active as global citizens. Working for a better world requires an understanding of the shared challenges we all are facing, an understanding of what needs to be done and knowledge of options to be active within this. However we also need to sustain ourselves and the movements working for a better world, otherwise we experience burnout. Self care, strengthening resilience and being aware of our surroundings will enable us to return to our innate wisdom as human beings, maintain a balance that is possible to contribute, and continue our contributions – all the while celebrating and smiling as we do so.

We used a web to demonstrate how interconnected the 5 WAYS OF WELLBEING  are.

WORKSHOP: Creative Writing as a tool for building resilience and Global Citizenship.

Creative Writing exercises encouraged us to map out our personal journeys in becoming good global citizens. We were guided through a process that helped us reflect on something significant that shaped us to become the people we are today .....active global citizens.

See below some a sample of some poems we wrote.

By Rosemary
It came silently and soft
almost hushed as though
I wasn't meant to know

Some may say it was bitterly-
sweet, the way your tastebuds
develop as you grow

The air was close, heavy at
first, but as the door opened
in flowed flowers and spice

As before, the light in the room was dim,
echoing the hearts, but slowly
in seeped the light through
the glass in the door

As I emerged from that room
I knew that I had made it
I knew it was meant for me

And now, here I stand ready,
Now my heart feels strong,
my head is full of brightness
my hands want to encourage!

Echos by Grainne

The sound was like an echo, an echo, with
a strong world music beat behind it.
It tasted like tapas and tequila on a
lazy Sunday afternoon, lights dimmed
with salt, lime and spicy things

The smell was like feet- dancing feet,
dancing feet, feeling their way across the
floor in time with the music, alone and
with a partner

The sight of other bodies meeting, melting,
jumping, rolling and climbing...with me,
against, together

People watching. It didn't matter
I felt good, complete, alive, tuned in - body awake,
limbs moving, in a trance yet super aware. Invincible.

Now my heart feels like I miss that time, a
desire for my body to move once again. regret
(why we didn't go to Israel?)
My head is full of thoughts as the body no longer
wriggles to release them. Shake it out, shake it out.
My hands want to once agin feel the floor,
feet want to run, jump, spin, all of me
rolling, tumbling, happy!

A moment of present by Andras
I have travelled around only to find the best place
is the present, to be
I heard birds singing in the forest,
waves arrive to the shore, a never ending heartbeat
like drinking water after a week in the desert
I smelled incense from the Far East
And saw such beauty in simplicity
I felt home.
Now my heart feels like meeting an old friend
My head is full of curiosity, what does he have to say?
My hands want to touch and hold him,
but he is already gone

exploring our city and our global citizenship

Today we explored the city, with the following instructions!

Walk in the urban environment responding to the questions below provided with.
Take images of what you observe in response to each prompt. In each image incroperate text, writing questions  comments and observations in different ways. For example
Write with chalk on the ground within the scene you want to record
Write on a piece of paper, place it in the scene and photograph
Write text through an acetate and photograph scene through the acetate
You can hold text on the scene you are photographing.
Delete any images you took in error so the photos can be presented directly as a slide show. Please ensure that the images are taken on a camera device, phone , that allows direct connection to the projector for play back.

Purpose
To develop capacity to see the world through different eyes.
To improve awareness of surroundings, mindfulness and critical thinking skills
To develop thinking as s global citizen, looking at the interconnections and interdependences
To look at how the environment can be used to nurture, health, learning, sense of belonging.

These are some of the images from the exploration

Food is a social and political theme connecting us with the rest of the world

We put things in the bin...we send them somewhere else. Where do we send our rubbish? Who has to deal with it? What is the impact?

CREATIVITY, RESILIENCE & GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

Jan 3rd - 10th 2015

What is Creativity, Resilience and Global Citizenship?

Fast forward is a training programme that explores Creativity Resilience and Global Citizenship and  what values and capacities are important to nurture in ourselves and in our young people who face the challenges of growing up in a rapidly changing, challenging and unequal world. Within the programmes, partners from UK, Malta, Ireland, Hungary and Sardinia will share creative processes that can help build capacities to shape a better future in which we can live as responsible global citizens.

As well as the learning and exchange within the process the group are developing a resource for practitioners working in the field of youth and also making recommendations for practitioners and policy makers.

What does the training offer?

The training focuses on capacities that enable young people to grow a responsible global citizens.  We would like to invite you prepare a two hour workshop, using the strengths and experiences of your team and focuses on nurturing a specific capacity in work with young people.
We will provide a template for you to complete and provide some guiding questions to help you reflect as team.
We would like to receive a copy of  your workshop plan by end of November.
Please let us know if you would like to make this contribution to the programme

Who is the training for?

Participants have been selected based on their passion about work with young people and the  passionate about youth participation, about making the world a better place and about sharing their creativity.

The programme is hosted by YWICork in partnership with CIT Crawford College of Art and Design's,  Creativity and Change programme.
The programme is supported by Erasmus+ and Irish Aid
